Top 5 Herbs to Grow Inside

Image result for windowsill herb garden

Easy to grow herbs for kids and (tends to kill everything) adults inside your home during the winter months is a great way to practice (or continue) gardening.  Using your kitchen windowsill or a South facing window is best recommended.

Peppermint, Medicinal Plant

💚Mint

Very fragrant.  Used well with deserts, teas, lemonade, etc.  Also known to grow and spread
           quickly.

💚Chives

Goes great with omelets, soups and potatoes.  Snip these when the spears are a few inches
long to help keep from flowering.

Parsley, Leaves, Cooking, Food, Herbs

💚Parsley

Simmer in soups and sauces.  Seeds take 3-4 weeks to germinate but grow to be about 12-18
             inches in height.

Basil, Herbs, Food, Fresh, Cooking

💚Basil

Main ingredient for pesto, also used in tomato dishes and soups.  Does grow to be two feet,
so be sure to prune often if you'd like to keep this little guy little.

Herb, Oregano, Origanum, Oregano

💚Oregano

Great for spaghetti dishes, pizza sauce, or anything with tomatoes.  These seedlings are also
slow to germinate but they do grow tall.

How to decide which to grow

It's always best to think about what kind of dishes you tend to prepare on a weekly or monthly basis to help you know which spices you already use.  Do you tend to make more tomato base dishes like spaghetti and lasagna, or lemonades and teas.  Then figure out how much space you have for your plants to grow.  This will determine what kind of herbs and how many to start with.  😊

Reusable foods: a growing list.

I had posted a list earlier about some foods that you don't have to throw away, you can put them in a pot and regrow them.  Check this post out  for the guides on green onions, and garlic. This time we will be talking about some of our best spuds.    What is first on the table? 🍠Sweet Potatoes! Who doesn't love a sweet potato? If you have never had one, pick one up next shopping trip.  You can prepare them just like a regular potato.  My favorite way to make a sweet potato is to mash them up, and add cinnamon and brown sugar.  My wife taught me this.     To regrow a sweet potato do this.  Take the bottoms of the sweet potato, jam some tooth picks in the sides.  Suspend the potato over a glass of water so it is partly submerged.  Put the cup of water in a sunny spot, and wait a few weeks.  Add water as needed.  Now you will have roots on bottom and shoots on top.  Divide your potato up, and plant.  Harvest your new Sweet potatoes when the leaves turn yellow.  Do
